Liposuction will remove excess fat on your body, such as in the stomach area, hip area (love handles), buttocks, and inner/outer thigh areas. If you are in good overall health and are not extremely overweight, liposuction can remove those trouble fat deposits and give you the smooth, contoured appearance you desire.
How is Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure meaning you can go home the same day as surgery. Liposuction procedures will range from two hours to up to four hours depending on the areas treated and the amount of fat being removed. Dr. Tirre uses both the tumescent liposuction technique as well as the ultrasonic liposuction technique.
In the tumescent liposuction technique, Dr. Tirre will inject a saline solution mixed with medication into the tissues of the area where the fat will be removed. By injecting the solution, it makes it easier for the removal of the fat without as much trauma to the tissues. He will then use a small vacuum inserted into very small incisions to remove the fat. Sutures will be used to close the incision and you will be put into a compression garment following surgery.
In the ultrasonic liposuction technique, it utilizes the same methods as the tumescent liposuction with the addition of ultrasonic energy. This ultrasonic energy melts the fat and then it is suctions out with the small vacuum.
What is the Recovery for Liposuction Surgery?
Patients are able to go home following liposuction and will be wearing a compression garment. Liposuction is a very well tolerated procedure with little who say they experience any pain following the surgery. The saline solution with medications that is injected during the procedure contains a local anesthetic. This numbing effect can last a few days.
Sutures will be removed in a week or so and the compression garment will be worn for a few weeks. This compression garment helps to continue to shape your body and assist in the healing process. While you will often see an immediate reduction in the fatty areas targeted, it will be up to 4-6 months before the swelling has completely subsided and your new body shape is revealed.
Will my Fat Return?
The number of fat cells in your body does not change; however, during weight loss and gain the existing fat cells get larger or smaller. Fat cells do not reproduce once they are removed so the areas treated with liposuction will remain contoured. If you do gain weight in the future, you would still gain weight in that area but your overall body contouring would remain proportional.
